Cantabria
All around the scenery
of Cantabria is varied and stunning. Beautiful beaches, both vibrant ones in the
city of Santander and small bays in the outlying villages will satisfy the families
or a more leisurely approach to holidaying. The famous Picos de Europa is less
than one hour's drive from Santander providing spectacular mountain scenery and
hundreds of hiking trails. The numerous villages, many of them Roman in origin,
offer a sample of true Spanish life, with their squares and bars offering a focus
for the local community and visitors. Santillana del Mar has its marvelous 14,000
years old cave paintings and Romanesque Cathedral to admire and Comillas is home
to the famous and architecturally stunning monastery. San Vicente de la Barquera
is an old Roman fishing town, and, with its impressive castle, it is thoroughly
recommended that it be visited. Santander itself is a beautiful city, with the
sea, the beaches and the mountains forming an impressive backdrop. It is small
enough to get to know well over one or two week's holiday and yet large enough
to offer a vibrant and lively metropolis for all ages to enjoy. The shops which
open until 7.30 prove tempting during the day, the evening is remarkable in the
fact that babies to 90 year olds can be seen taking the air in the squares and
streets and the nights come alive with the bars and restaurants and the nightclubs
which keep going until the early dawn hours.
